Random thought before I sleep: Why isn't the Malibu widely used as a cop car?

I mean, seriously. It’s fairly large, cheap, and American. What more could you want?

Because Caprice.

Kinja'd!!!

Also because the Malibu isn’t very fast.

Not fast enough, not built well enough, not RWD or AWD like most departments prefer. It’s roomy, but not enough for all the gear a patrol car carries around.

Well I have noticed CHP and police like the Explorer now, totally bypassed cars, there are some Dodges at the Central Marin PD. It’s the contract game, GM has probably focused their effort on these contracts and what they want.

Last-gen Malibu with the 3.6 : 0-60 in 6.3 seconds, top speed limited to 117.

Caprice PPV with the same engine : 6.1 seconds, top speed of 147 mph (unrestricted)

So the Malibu would probably be as fast as the Caprice with a proper Police Pack.

As you said, the only reason cops don’t run Malibus is that Chevrolet already offers a very roomy FWD barge for cop duty (fleet Impala) and a more nimble dedicated RWD police cruiser (Caprice PPV).

0-60 is one thing, but whether or not it can maintain high speeds is another thing. If I’m not mistaken, the Caprice is a rebadged Holden Commodore sports sedan, which is much better suited for high-speed pursuits than a Malibu.

Yes, but the outgoing Malibu is based on Epsilon II, same as the Impala cop car still sold today.

They would probably not be as good for high-speed pursuits, but would be appreciated for their fuel economy and smaller size in places where you can’t go fast anyway (like in city centers).

There are a few malibus around here and they always catch me off guard. There used to be more a decade or so ago. It seems that Ford’s SUV that has less ground clearance than an Outback and Dodge’s long in the tooth light show simply won more supply contracts.

Yeah, but if 0-60 were all that mattered, the V6 Camry would be an even better option.

It would’ve been a perfectly fine alternative to the W-body Impala. The ‘08-’12 Malibu actually had more room in the back seat than the Impala, and a pretty big trunk. The bottom line though, is GM never offered a police package on them.

The cops are up against gross vehicle weight limitations from the OEMs which forces them to SUV which have higher GVW and RWD. Malibu isn’t enough car.

Where I live most police now use a Taurus SHO. I know cause one was behind me on the shoulder of the highway.

I don’t know why cops need fast cars at all. Haven’t we conclusively proven with study after study that high-speed pursuits tend to maim and kill innocent bystanders?

Hell, I live in a place where there is less than a mile of road with more than one lane in each direction (this section is covered by the local equivalent of a highway patrol). Our local police could drive minivans with a governor-limited top speed of 60mph (maybe add push bars?) and it wouldn’t make them any less effective. There are only about 2-3 places in their jurisdiction where you could safely exceed 60mph for more than a handful of seconds, anyhow (all on the aforementioned highway).

V6 Camrys are actually quite stable at high-speed, so that wouldnt be a bad idea.

but they are not ‘’american’’ (yes I know it’s made in Georgetown and in Lafayette AND it won the ‘’Most American-made Car’’ award in 2015, beating the F-150 in the process), so Chevy, Dodge or Ford it is.
